DAMODAR 2
Artist: Dirgha
Devi Dasi
Once when Krishna was drinking His mother’s
breast milk, Yashoda noticed that the milk on the oven was boiling over. She quickly put Krishna down to tend to the milk
pot. Krishna was angry because He was still hungry. He took a rock and broke the yogurt pot and began to eat the yogurt in
a secluded place. When Yashoda returned she saw the broken pot and decided that Krishna had done this. She picked up a stick
and chased after Him. When she caught Him she attempted to tie Him to a wooden grinding mortar. Even after gathering all the
ropes in the house, it was still too short to tie around Krishna’s abdomen. Finally, after much effort, she tied Him
up. The word Damodar is divided into two words, dama means rope and udara meaning abdomen. When the words are joined they form the word “Damodar” or one who was tied
around the abdomen with a rope. This pastime is mentioned in the Srimad-Bhagavatam,
10th canto, 9th chapter.
