BATHING CEREMONY
Artist: Parikshit Dasa
When baby Krishna was three months old a Vedic ceremony called utthana
was performed by Yashoda and other women in the neighborhood. This ceremony is performed when a child tries to rise and turn
over on his back. The child is then taken out of the house for the first time. Yashoda called for the learned brahmanas to
chant Vedic mantras for protection of the child. Yashoda and other ladies bathed baby Krishna with auspicious substances and
blessed Him with a long life. Yashoda then gave the brahmanas ample food grains, clothing, desirable cows and garlands. This
pastime is mentioned in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, 10th Canto, 7th chapter, 4th verse.
